Until this is implemented, I was able to get my custom sort order in the designation drop down boxes by adding numbers to the public name field. (See screenshot attached)

This is a very important feature! The problem with having the first alpha designation showing up in the drop down is that it gives undue prominence to one designation over the others. Users could also be confused thinking that is the only option available.
