In Altru 4.4 we introduced a feature to send receipts via email. The sales order stores the email address in the order record.

On the Order Search screen and the Refund screen, we should add Email Address as a search field. Clients who are onsite and had their receipt emailed to them may not have access to it to find the order number to do a lookup. 

In the interim, check out this thread for how to query an email address to get to an order. You can also follow the same process you would now if someone lost their receipt.
