Not being able to change the name of a smart field as soon as it's used somewhere else is a huge pain. Hide the current Name field and replace the values with some 47-character system generated ID. The create a new field called Public Name or Visible Name where a user can change it at any time.
If you'd like to be really nice, automatically move the current Names to the Public Name field for everyone.
It would also be REALLY helpful to have a folder structure for smart fields. When you just have 10-20 of them, it's no problem to search for the one you need. If you have more than that, it's a huge pain. Plus, since you can't rename them, there's no way to indicate that a particular smart field is obsolete so that folks building queries can see which smart field -- such as Lifetime Giving or Lifetime Gifts or All Gifts Ever -- is the correct one to choose.
