Exclude "asterisk" for optional additional member in webform?

For our membership webforms, we allow up to 3 names on the membership card. We have customized the text such that the additional lines say "spouse/partner/caregiver (optional). HOWEVER, because Altru requires that a user enter Last Name as a minimum, an asterisk appears next to each adiditional line.



Has anyone else encountered problems with users confusing with this required information? Is it possible to make the asterisk appear ONLY if the user enters information into the other boxes?
