The Additional Donation feature would allow us to ask the customer to make a donation when they check out. So it displays in the shopping cart. And the site will ask for a donation even if the person is already making a donation.
Currently, it looks like there is a 50 character limit for the Additional Donation text box (the text that displays on the site - e.g. "Please make an additional donation"). 50 characters just isn't enough. That's not enough space to tell someone what they're making a donation to. And it's definitely not enough to add any language to tell someone why they should make that additional gift or to add any type of impact statement.
Consider the fund/designation that we would select for our Additional Donation. On one hand, you might think we'd pick our most well known effort. We're known for saving sea turtles, so we might ask for an additional donation to support that. But that's something we already fundraise for on our site. And the Additional Donation feature appears at check out even if they're already making a gift. We would not be creating a good user/donor experience if someone was making a gift to save sea turtles and we asked for an additional gift to save sea turtles.
The fund or designation I would select would likely be one of our lesser known initiatives. Something that most people aren't already giving to. Because of that, we need to more room to explain what it is to build the value to make the ask a successful one.
I'm writing rough sample sentences and I'm coming in around 200 characters. I'd need to see how that would look on the site, but a limit of at least 200 (maybe 250) would be my suggestion.
In its current form, my organization is not willing to use the Additional Donation tool. As I mentioned, we don't believe it creates a good donor experience.
By the way, it'd be great if we had to option to choose whether the Additional Donation ask appeared in shopping carts that already contain a donation. If you agree, maybe go vote for this idea:
