Updating Membership Record When Primary Member is Deceased Merged

Recently we almost missed receiving a significant membership renewal because the primary member was marked as deceased. When we mailed renewal notices, the other spouse wasn't recognized as the primary member. Had to change the information manually after she called to ask why she didn't receive a notice. Is the only solution to manually go in and change the record or can some criteria be changed in the renewal mailings? Are there any plans for Altru to automatically update membership records when a spouse is deceased?
