Is there a way to send communications that are not appeals?

Is appeal the only way to run mailings through Altru? We send invitations, notices, and e-newsletters to our members and constituents, but they are not all appeals. The problem I see is that when we do want to send appeals, we can not use the exclusions properly since a member's magazine will have been processed as an appeal. Is there a way to work around this?
