Last week I was tasked with fixing soft crediting issues for a number of our board members with related companies (most family owned). On many, automatic soft crediting had already been setup, but the soft credits for past gifts just weren't there (the rule was added after those initial gifts). When adding spouses and soft credit rules in Raiser's Edge, there was a great tick box that said, "Soft credit for all past gifts". Check that box and everything is done for you, no extra work required. I spoke with Altru support and found out that there is no way for Altru to automatically add soft credits for past gifts and that I would need to add them manually. I spent nearly 2 days soft crediting over 500 gifts.

There has to be a better way to approach this. I wasn't here when the data was transitioned from RE to Altru and thus don't know how clean it was, but there should be more options to help  organizations clean up what they already have or even just add credit for relationships they have just discovered.
